Tradition of Excellence
Everyone involved in the band program should share the same high musical standards, moral standards, and work ethic. Systems should be in place for all daily routines, rehearsals, trips, etc. Having these systems in place will keep you from having decision fatigue. Everyone involved should be system architects and contribute in their area of expertise.
Program Climate
Climate is the prevailing attitude, standards, and environmental conditions of your program. In order for the culture to be strong, you must take the time to share your vision with those who are a part of your program and open the door for the visions of others to be included. A shared vision helps everyone to focus on attaining their goals together and making those goals a reality. Always make choices for your program that take you towards your goals. Pay attention to the details and if you should stray off the path, jump right back on.
Instruction
Instruction is the 'how' of what we do. How the curriculum will be taught. Classroom strategies and instructional approaches used to teach the curriculum. Is there a culture of sectional attendance and is there a viable private lesson program.
Planning
Using TEKS based curriculum, establish a timeline for your year; think macro to micro. Start with the end in mind and work back from there creating both short term and long term goals for you program. Your rehearsals to achieve these goals will only be as strong as the planning itself. The lesson plan maps out the daily, weekly, or seasonal activities, assessments, and resources that will be used to engage students in learning. Create lesson plans from your timeline and rehearsal agenda's from the lesson plans.
The mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.
